Winter is Coming
Winter brings many challenges in the skincare realm. Dryness, flakiness, sensitivity and irritation are all symptoms each of us can expect. Low humidity, high winds and dropping temperatures will strip the skin of its essential nutrients, leaving the skin vulnerable to damage and pre-mature aging.
Luckily, we can prevent inevitable damage with a few simple changes.
Switch to a gentle cleanser. Consider an oil, balm or cream-based cleanser to prevent over-stripping.
Layer hydration. Now is a great time to get in the habit of utilizing a hydrating toner or serum, especially if they contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides and anti-inflammatory ingredients. These products are the most penetrative, and using them will strengthen the skin internally. Increasing your water intake and using an indoor humidifier is also vital in ensuring your skin doesn’t exemplify the dried fruits in our holiday puddings or breads.
Upgrade your moisturizer. You will be producing less oil by default, and the environment will be leaching your skin’s moisture and hydration. Upgrading to a heavier weight cream or thicker lotion is often necessary.
Add a treatment oil or barrier repair product. This aids as a sealing agent and is usually used after your moisturizer. This type of product often contains silicones, petrolatum, oils and/or omegas (fatty acids).
Use SPF. UV rays still exist in winter, and the environmental aggressors leave your skin vulnerable. Even when overcast, snow reflects UV - intensifying the damaging and aging affects of the sun.
Pair the above with an increase in physical activity and healthy fat/omegas in your diet. It will help you retain moisture and combat the slower production of oils within. The increase in activity will aid in healthy circulation, ensuring the nutrients in your bloodstream can nourish the skin.
