“Skinimalism”

Skinimalism is a result driven skincare trend that embraces minimalism by focusing on fewer products, less steps and higher quality ingredients. It promotes simplifying routines, reducing excessive product layering and prioritizing skin health.

Skinimalism is all about focusing on the essentials, and it’s usually the recipe for success if you’re new to skincare. If you have never used a cleanser, it’s a terrible idea to throw yourself into a 7-step routine. You’re unlikely to remember what each step does, you’ll be overwhelmed and In a week’s time those products are apt to be thrown in a drawer and forgotten. That will give you 0 results, and if you focus on the core basics you’re more likely to sustain it.

A successful skincare routine is not based on how many products you use, but the quality of the product and consistent usage. It’s also important to acknowledge that most of these routines that have an excess of steps, are created by brands trying to get you to use as many products as possible. The viral Korean skincare trend is a great example of this, and if you are over-introducing ingredients into your skin, you’re more likely to break out and cause more problems. You might even be doubling up on the same ingredients, costing yourself $100s for no additional result.

The 3 most common skinimalist routines are:

  1. Single Step: cleanse.

    • This is better for the novice that isn’t used to having a daily ritual at all. Ideally you get used to doing this 2xs a day, and will be able to upgrade quickly.

  2. Second Step: cleanse & moisturize.

    • The 2 step routine is the most common, especially with a dual purpose lotion including SPF. I have seen incredible skin preservation in many anti-aging clients who have done this, and only this for 40yrs+. The key is they rarely skipped a day.

  3. Standard Step: cleanse, moisturize & correct.

    • This is the ideal simplified routine. You are cleansing the skin of pollution, bacteria and build up. You are nourishing and preserving your skin, and you are using one product that is helping correct and improve on something. It’s usually in the form of a serum, but for some it’s a toner or even an eye cream.

Skinimalism is all about prioritizing efficacy over excess. This practice aligns with environmentally friendly ideals, and ensures you are not wasting product or coin. This is the best place to start if you are new to skincare, struggling with consistency, or have hoards of unused/expired product.
